2011.186.1.1Description
A stereoscopic photograph "7. Los Angeles, from Fort Hill (Bird's-eye.)" by William M. Godfrey, Los Angeles, ca. 1870. Taken from the lower east side of Fort Moore Hill, the image, looking southeast, captures a man carrying a rifle (probably an on-duty constable) on New High Street next to a portico-faced structure. At the far right is part of an ox team on Temple Street. In the distance is a portion of Temple Block, including an old adobe and an undeveloped lot near the 1857 and 1868 commercial structures erected by Jonathan and F. P. F. Temple. Also of note is the clock tower of the Market House, built in 1859 by Jonathan Temple, and which was then the courthouse and city and county offices. The caption is on a label pasted on at the bottom right. On the reverse is Godfrey's cartouche. With soiling, a mark at the far left center of the right image, edge abrasions, and a few small stains, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
