2011.265.1.1Description
A stereoscopic photograph "Hay Bailing," by Elias A. Bonine, Pasadena ca. 1888. The view shows an open field and several dozen or so feet away is a large hay stack, next to which are two horse-drawn wagons, one larger than the other. To the right are several hay bales. An ink inscription on the reverse reads, "Hay Bailing" and there are other, but severely faded, pencil inscriptions as well as Bonine's cartouche. Bonine, from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, worked in Altoona as a photographer before migrating to Californa. In Los Angeles briefly, he worked in Mendocino by 1880 and then went to Yuma, where his photos of Indians are well-known. By the late 1880s, he was in Pasadena and remained there until his death in 1916. There is much heavy soiling, stains, three losses on the image and significant edge abrasions, so the overall condition is poor.Lexicon
