Description
A stereoscopic photograph, "No. 71 Santa Monica Bay, Los Angeles Co. Cal.," published by Isaiah W. Taber, but taken by A. C. Varela, ca. 1878. The view shows the coastline to the north of Santa Monica with steep bluffs over deserted beaches and a portion of the ocean at the left. The captioning on the bottom of the right image is in the script found on Varela's late 1870s work in the Los Angeles area. In the 1880 census, Varela was in Santa Clara and likely sold his negatives to Taber when he left the state to return to his civil service career in Washington, D. C., from when he had come to California. With some soiling, abrasions and fading on the reverse, the overall condition is good.
