Description

A stereoscopic photograph of Angels' Flight funicular railway, Los Angeles, Frederick H. Rogers, ca. 1902. The view is taken from the north side of Third Street looking west. The Third Street tunnel looks newly completed and to the south or left is the railway with a car at the bottom, where the arched Angels Flight sign and fee placard are located, and the track ascending to the top of Bunker Hill, where a flag-topped observation tower is located. Houses line the railway, but in a few years business structures would replace them. At the right of the railway is a real estate advertising sign. That and the houses appear in photos stated to be from the opening at the end of December 1901 and this image seems to be from about that time. Frederick Horace Rogers was born to a prominent woodcarver in Middlesex, England in August 1835 and left for Australia in 1854, where he married and lived in Hobart, Tasmania. He took up photography in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane but, after his wife's death in 1875, he left for California. He lived and took photos in San Francisco in 1880 and was in Los Angeles by 1884, where he remarried. Rogers later lived in San Bernardino and San Jacinto. His son, Alfred Horace, was also a photographer and it is possible this photo was taken by him. The mount has soiling, a few stains, with abrasions, but the image is only somewhat soiled, so the overall condition is good.
