Description

A stereoscopic photograph, view of Rancho La Merced, ca. 1870. Photograph by H.T. Payne, Los Angeles as part of the Southern California Scenery series. View of the one story, flat roofed adobe house owned by the Temple family. The front of the house is bordered by a wooden, picket fence and a few palm trees. In front of the fence a group is gathered around something on the ground. A woman stands next to a young girl with three boys at their feet. Closer to the house are two women. These are most likely the children of F.P.F. Temple and Antonia Margarita and also household workers. To the left is a drying rack. In the foreground is a zanja, water ditch. The photograph is in fair condition with moderate edge abrasion, soiling, and overall discoloration.
