Description

A studio portrait of a young black woman, Pacific Studio, Los Angeles, ca. 1900s. The image in an oval frame within a thick matte shows the woman in a dark skirt, white blouse with a high collar, and hair pulled up in back, standing and looking to her right, and she holds a floral bouquet in her hands, on the left of which appears to be a wedding ring. The studio cartouche is at the lower right. On the reverse is a faint pencil inscription, which appears to read, "Mr. E. Lewis / Res 842 Hemlock St." In the 1900 census, there was a Eugene Lewis at that address, living with his parents and siblings. Lewis died in Los Angeles in 1950, but it is not known who the woman was. With a missing part of the matte at left and heavy fading on that side, stains, pin holes, soiling, darkening to the matte and edge rubbing, the condition is fair.
