Description
A studio portrait of Constance Balfour, Witzel, Los Angeles, April 1928. The view shows the woman from the mid-torso up. She wears a dark sleeveless dress and holds what appear to be ostrich feathers in her arms. A dated inscription by the subject is at the left and is signed "your friend and teacher." Balfour was a soprano singer who worked in London, New York and elsewhere throughout the world before settling in Los Angeles, where she was principal soloist for the local symphony and also performed in operas. She taught singing from an office in the Blanchard Building in downtown Los Angeles. Witzel's cartouche is at the lower left of the photo and his stamp on the reverse. With some heavy staining, especially on the reverse, warping, soiling, edge abrasions and yellowing, the condition is fair overall.
