Description

A studio portrait of "Fidel Myers," Kohler, Los Angeles, ca. 1910s. Pasted down in a portfolio, the image shows a young man in a black tuxedo jacket and trousers, white vest, shirt and rie and with what appears to be a cane superimposed and not in the subject's hands. There is also a ribbon crossing the best and down one side under his jacket and the man wears a black top hat. The portrait appears to be for a ceremony of some kind. A pencil inscription on the portfolio reads, "Fidel Myers / mom's boyfriend." There was a Fidel B. Meyer, whose grandfather, Marius, a French sheep rancher, owned 1165 acres at what is now Santa Fe Springs and had the first oil well in the area drilled on his ranch about 1900. Meyer (1900-1985) worked on a farm owned first by his father, Camille, and then, after a divorce, by his mother, Victoria. With tears on the portfolio flap folds, silvering on the image margins, edge abrasions and light soiling, the overall condition is good.
