Description

A Western Air Express cartograph (a) and envelope (b), Los Angeles, April 1929. The cartograph is for the third anniversary of the airline and has information about the mileage and performance record of the carrier and the beginnings of a preprinted letter on the front and back panels. When opened, the item has a pop-up airplane at the top of a map of southern California showing routes used by the line, as well as city and town names and pictorial representations of what these are known for (film for Hollywood, the mission at San Juan Capistrano, oil at Culver City, etc.) The envelope has a statement at the upper left about the firm's "Third Air Mail Anniversary" date of 17 April 1929. Though the envelope was not used, it is missing the sealing flap and is partially torn at the sides with browning, as well. The cartograph has browning and light soiling, but the condition is good overall.
