Description

Negative, Photographic: A black and white photographic negative of Antonia Margarita Workman de Temple and Julia Davis, ca. 1872. The image is a studio portrait with Mrs. Temple seated at right, Miss Davis standing at left and leaning on a pile of books resting on a wooden stand, and another stand with a vase on it in the right background. Mrs. Temple was wearing a dark-colored long dress, a dark floral patterned shawl, and had her left arm crossed in front of her, while her right arm rested on the arm of the chair. Miss Davis wore a white dress with a black jagged hem, a dark blouse with a white collar and bow, and dark shoes. Julia Davis was the daughter of Joe Davis, an employee of the Temple family. The Davis family lived near the Temples in the Rancho La Merced area and Julia appears to have lived with the family. Also, Mrs. Temple was Miss Davis' godmother. The source for the photograph is Carlos Hartnell, a Davis descendant. A print is 97.8.1. The negative is in mint condition. On the source photograph at the top in ink was "Julia Davis Margarita Temple/(Workman)." Number-Units: 1
