Description

AAA STRIP MAP, LOS ANGELES TO PHOENIX, PART ONE Color: Black; White A strip map showing part one of the route from Los Angeles to Phoenix ending at the eastern end of Los Angeles County, issued by the Automobile Association of Southern California, ca. 1920. The artifact shows two routes leading from the company's headquarters at Pico and Figueroa streets. One route leads through the northern San Gabriel Valley along Foothill Boulevard and other roads in that direction, while the southern route is along what was then called the "Ocean to Ocean Highway," meaning today's Valley Blvd. Mile markers are indicated with circular borders. City and community names are also provided, as are symbols for hotels and garages along the route. There are some indications of streets not directly on the route, as well as railroad lies, hills and mountains, rivers and other features. At the right of center, within a border, is the title of the map, while at the bottom right is a bordered box, indicating the map was issued by the AAA's "Touring Bureau Route and Map Service." At the right margin is the notation that red and blue streets indicate paved and unpaved roads, respectively, but there are no such marks. The number "60" is at the left margin, indicating, probably, an identification number. A scale of miles is at the lower left. On the back is a notice of contracted hotels and garages, which are listed by city or community. With minor creases and dents at the corner, slight discoloration, a few small stains and minor foxing, the object is in good condition.
