ADOBE MAKING AREA FOR LA CASA NUEVAEntry/Object ID
99.5.3.89Description
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of the adobe making area for La Casa Nueva, ca. 1922. In a clearing of a field, the area consists of large stacks of adobes in the front of a kiln at the left; smaller stacks at the center, perhaps of bricks removed from the kiln and at which there are two workers; and an area in the foreground in which bricks are laid out flat and on their sides, with a worker tending to these bricks. In the foreground are three small trees and the top of what appears to be a cement pipe. To the far left, behind the kiln, may be a small, temporary building and behind that, two large wooden poles, perhaps for electrical power. On the reverse, in the hand of a former curator, is the inscription "bricks made on w. side of T. hall. [La Casa Nueva] / was a parade ground - mil[itary] school." Below this is a stamp reading "THE PHOTO SHOP / 100 W. MAIN ST. / ALHAMBRA CA"--this is from the 1920s, when the print was developed, and a number "5", possibly "45" is stamped at the bottom right. There is also a pencil inscription at the bottom "5x7 Sepia." Aside from some smearing on the upper center of the front and slight discoloration on the reverse, the artifact is in good condition.
