Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of adobe-making sites on the Workman Homestead, ca. 1924. Close to the photographer is a large pit with one worker inside standing near a wheelbarrow filled with dirt. Another stands at the edge, hauling a mould out of the pit, while another mould sits next to him. Toward the left are two clumps of hay. In the center are three men standing next to and inside an adobe kiln in the process of being erected for the firing of adobes. Another kiln, topped with wood boards, which are also piled on one side, is behind them. To the right are long boards with some material stretched across them, looking much like animal skins. It is not easily discernible what this area might have been. At the far left are stacks of adobes piled three high with a few more bricks forming a fourth level. Behind the kilns may be stacks of wood for firing the kilns, although there also appear to be round pipes, perhaps concrete there, as well. In the background are rows of trees, perhaps walnuts, and being this the Puente Hills, indicating that this site is south of the La Casa Nueva construction site, as opposed to the view seen in item .675. On the reverse is a stamp reading "THE PHOTO SHOP / 108 W. MAIN ST. / ALHAMBRA, CAL." at left of center. At the bottom right corner is a stamped number that is eroded next to a number "6." With one crease at the left of the artifact and a stain at the lower right, the artifact is otherwise in good condition. Number-Units: 1
