Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of adobe-making sites on the Workman Homestead, ca. 1924. The photographer stood near one end of a large pit, probably two to three feet deep. Inside this pit, at the far left, are a few adobe bricks standing on end and drying. Behind this, there seems to be another pit, again at left, with a worker standing in it. At center, behind the foreground pit and to the right of the second pit is a worker crouching near a group of adobes lying flat in the dirt. From the right toward the center are three large adobe kilns used to dry the bricks. More adobes are sitting next to each of these kilns. The site is located amidst a grove of trees, assumed to be walnuts, which provided branches for fuel in the kilns. The location appears to be west of the La Casa Nueva construction site (the power poles in the background may be those along Turnbull Canyon Road to the west.) The image is somewhat washed out, especially at the left, indicating an exposure problem. Stamped in the paper on the reverse in several places is the word "VELOX." On the reverse lower right corner is a stamped number "29", while a pencil inscription at the upper right corner, by a former museum curator, reads "Brown." This refers to the family that owned the Homestead from 1940 to about 1970 and donors of this image. Except for one creased corner and some very light discoloration, the image is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
