ADOBE-MAKING SITE, WORKMAN HOMESTEAD, FROM THE EAST
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of an adobe-making area at the Workman Homestead, ca. 1922. The photographer stood to the east, possibly where the Mission Walkway was being constructed. A large adobe kiln is at center, covered with wood planks. At right, there are five workers, three standing and two squatting, working on bricks or watching. Around them are many bricks lying on their sides drying in the sun. To the left, are lan-tos with canvas or some other material creating barriers. One man stands in this area and there appear to be clothes drying on a line behind him, indicating that these are probably the living quarters for the adobe makers. To the left of this is Evergreen Lane leading to the Homestead from Turnbull Canyon Road from the west and the outline of which is marked by power poles. In the foreground, next to the west drive, which is partially visible, are trees, shrubs, and other landscaping. In the background, is the plain leading west toward the San Gabriel River and El Monte. The reverse has a stamp, partly obliterated, of the shop where the film was processed. The full stamp reads: "THE PHOTO SHOP / 108 W. MAIN ST. / ALHAMBRA, CAL." At the bottom right is a stamped number that seems to be "46", but the first number is largely erased. Aside from fingerprint smudges at front upper right and reverse upper left, the artifact is in good condition.
