ADOBE-MAKING SITE, WORKMAN HOMESTEAD, FROM WEST DRIVE
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of an adobe-making area at the Workman Homestead, ca. 1922. The photographer stood on the west driveway, part of the drive is visible at the lower right, looking to the northwest. A large adobe kiln is at center, covered with wood planks. At left a worker is stooped over a pile of wood debris. Three other workers are at right, where there are adobe bricks lying in the sun to dry, but it cannot be ascertained what they are doing. Two wheelbarrows and piles of undetermined debris are also notable. In the foreground, next to the drive are newly planted palm and fir trees and a small shrub. There may be a walnut tree behind the palm, as well. In the background, especially right, are houses and buildings near the Homestead and the outline of the San Gabriel Mountains can scarcely be made out on the far right, providing a clue as to direction of the image [see item .1004, as well]. The reverse has a stamp, partly obliterated, of the shop where the film was processed. The full stamp reads: "THE PHOTO SHOP / 108 W. MAIN ST. / ALHAMBRA, CAL." At the bottom right is a stamped number that seems to be "46", but the first number is largely erased. Aside from some slight stains and surface soiling, the artifact is in good condition.
