Description

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPH OF HACIENDA HEIGHTS, MARCH 1, 1961 Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction photograph of an aerial view of Hacienda Heights, 1 March 1961. The aircraft was over the southern section of the community near the Puente Hills when it took this image, which shows, generally, much of La Puente, parts of Valinda and sections of what is now Industry Hills at the top and upper right; the largely open farm area, with occasional homes and newly emerging industrial sites of the new City of Industry; and at the center and bottom the rapidly growing bedroom community of Hacienda Heights, though there are occasional groves of avocado or citrus trees between tract developments. To the lower right is open land, where development had not extended beyond a mile or so east of Stimson Ave. Just above center is the Workman Homestead with the historic houses, cemetery and most outbuildings intact, as well as the 92-acre parcel easily identifiable between Hacienda Blvd. and Turnbull Canyon Rd. and between San Jose Creek, not yet turned into a concrete flood control channel, and the line to the north. Also of note are the Rowland House, right of center with groves to the north and east, and the John Reed/William R. Rowland ranch at the far right. At the center of the reverse is a stamp in black ink with the name of American Aerial Surveys, Inc. and its address. With little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
