AERIAL VIEW OF NATIONAL AIR RACES, MINES FIELD, LOS ANGELES, 15 SEPTEMBER 1928
Color: Black; White
An aerial photograph of the National Air Races at Mines Field, now Los Angles International Airport, 15 September 1928. The view is at 800 feet looking toward the northeast to the south of the main runway. At the left center is the white main building, flanked by crosshatched roads and many parked cars along these roads to the west and east. Just below the building are large crowds of spectators in four grandstands and at their sides. The runway has a white line in chalk leading onto the runway and there is a circle with a dot in the middle nearby. At least one aircraft is in flight at the center, though there appears to be several others in flight low to the ground over the runway at the right. Other aircraft are parked on the runway. Around the airport is largely undeveloped land, but at the top of the image is a more densely populated area. At the lower left is a printed caption with the date, time, altitude and "NATIONAL AIR RACES, MINES FIELD, L.A. CALIF." On the reverse is a stamp from the 15th Photo Section of the U. S. Army Air Corps based in San Francisco. The number "4" is in pencil near the stamp. Except for a small crease at the top left corner, light soiling on the back, light stains, and minor yellowing, the artifact is in good condition.
