AERIAL VIEW OF NATIONAL AIR RACES, MINES FIELD, LOS ANGELES, 15 SEPTEMBER 1928
Color: Black; White
An aerial photograph of the National Air Races at Mines Field, now Los Angles International Airport, 15 September 1928. The view is at 2,000 feet looking toward the northeast from just outside the airport. The white main buildings are left of center with crosshatched roads and cars, mostly on the eastern side, parked along them. Two sections of runway are to the south and aircraft are on both. Chalk lines and a circle with a dot in the center are on the main runway nearest the buildings. There appear to be bleachers with spectators between the buildings and main runway. Around the airport is largely undeveloped land, but to the upper right of the image is a more densely populated area leading towards downtown Los Angeles, which is discernible because of the white 28-story City Hall. At the lower left is a printed caption with the date, time, altitude and "NATIONAL AIR RACES, MINES FIELD, L.A. CALIF." On the reverse is a stamp from the 15th Photo Section of the U. S. Army Air Corps based in San Francisco. The pencil inscription of "FRT 3" is adjacent. Except for light soiling on the back and minor yellowing, the artifact is in good condition.
