AERIAL VIEW OF THE HOMESTEAD SITE FROM THE NORTHWEST, CA. 1940
Color: Black; White
A black and white aerial photograph of the Homestead site from the northwest, ca. 1940. At center are the various buildings of the site including the tennis court and reservoir followed by the Workman House on the center left. The home is in an "h" shape with four gables at the corners and hipped roof in the center; to the right can be seen the pavilion roof, tank area, and west side of the water tower. Palm trees, bushes, and hedges surround both of the later structures. To the west is La Casa Nueva with the wings of the u-shaped home extending to the south; the two-story adobe home's roof is capped by ceramic shingles; with several windows around the walls; and main porch on the north. The Tepee is in the southwest corner of the west lawn which has grass; trees; bushes; round planters; and hedges. A road coming in from the north circles around both homes to the back running into Evergreen Lane. To the south are seven structures including the auditorium and garage. Seen in the far east, at the end of Evergreen Lane, is the heart-shaped planter and El Campo Santo cemetery; the Walter P. Temple Memorial is in the center surrounded by the tree-lined perimeter fence and exterior burial plots in the back center. Walnut trees encompass the surrounding landscape which includes a portion of San Jose Creek on the far south. On the bottom right corner is, "SPENCE/ AIR PHOTOS." The photograph was taken while the site was being used as El Encanto Sanitarium. With no signs of wear, the image, which has a corresponding negative as 99.6.10.224, is in good condition.
