Color: Black; White A photographic postcard with a temporary house in an orange grove in San Gabriel, postmarked 16 December 1910. The black and white image shows a wood-framed dweeling with a pitched roof and two screened windows with the windows opened and secured by rope. Two steps lead to a stoop at the front door between the windows. On either side and in the background are orange trees with fruit on them. The photograph was pasted onto the card, which is addressed on the back to "Mr Willis Bacon / Newfields St / Middletown / Conn-." The message on the back reads "Dear Willis - We / wish you and your dear / family a very Merry / Christmas and a / Happy New Year / Lovingly / Howard & Olive." Wrapped around the photo on the front is another message, which reads "This is our little 'air castle' / neslting [nestling] in our orange grove / of about 2 1/4 acres - Howard has / been contracting & building / out here at San Gabriel and looking after / the orchard at same time - We enjoy the living & sleeping outdoor very much." The postmark is at the upper right of the reverse and is from San Gabriel at 4:00 p.m. on 16 December 1910 and is partly stamped over the one-cent postage stamp, which is green and has an image of Benjamin Franklin. In fair condition, the card has surface soiling, discoloration, and foxing.
