Airplane "Angel of Los Angeles" in construction, circa July 1927. The view shows the triplane in construction in an open field near some automobiles parked by a metal building in an unidentified location in or near Los Angeles. The plane, funded by film star Hoot Gibson, designed by Leland Bryant and piloted by Arthur Rodgers, was an entrant in the Dole Derby, a race from Oakland to Honolulu which started on 12 August. The Angel of Los Angeles, however, crashed into San Francisco Bay shortly after take off ejecting the three men inside. Only two planes of eight that left the ground made it to Hawaii. There is an ink inscription on the back, identifying the plane, designer, and its entry into the Derby. It is also identified as an International Newsreel Photo image. With some curvature, but little other wear, the condition is good.
