Description

An envelope from the United States Hotel, Los Angeles, ca. 1878. The yellow envelope has a large vignette at the right of the building and the names of its proprietors, Henry Hammel and Andrew H. [usually erroneously referred to as Charles] Denker, who ran the hostelry from about 1868 until 1886 and also owned the Rancho Rodeo de las Aguas in today's Beverly Hills area. The item is addressed to "Mr. Watterman" of San Bernardino, this being Robert Waterman, a major figure there from 1874 and California governor from 1887 to 1891. The 3-cent stamp and postmark (which may be from September 1878) cover part of the vignette. With opening tears, creases, some soiling and ink stains, the condition is fair.
