Description

An old grapevine at Santa Barbara, H. T. Payne, ca. 1875. The view shows a young girl standing next to and a man seated on a trellised fence, behind which is the vine, which seems to have little foliage, indicating a winter date for the image. There are also large wooden boards for the arbor in which the vine grows. On the reverse, partially effaced by liquid damage, is an ink inscription noting the vine as the oldest in California. With the liquid stains, curvature of the mount, soiling, and edge wear, the condition is fair.
