Description

An unmounted cabinet card photograph, "450 Fourth St., L.A. Cal," by Munsey, ca. 1904. The view is taken from the north side of the thoroughfare looking east and takes in portions of several commercial buildings, including the Braly Block at the intersection with Hill Street, the city's first "skyscraper" and a twelve-story height limit buliding with a plaque reading "John Parkinson / Architect" on it. A banner about office rentals on that structure indicates it was newly completed and the building is now known as The Continental and is at 408 S. Spring. The structure to its left, now the Banco Popular building, is also extant. The structures closest to the photographer are gone and parking lots are in their place. In the street are streetcar tracks and a car of the 4th and Spring Street Railway is on one of them. At the left, parked on the side of the street, is a horse-drawn wagon of the Troy Laundry. Other vehicles and pedestrians on the sidewalks are also in view. With album paper residue on the reverse, a mark at the lower right of the image, darkening of the image, and soiling, the overall condition is good.
