Description

A black leather notebook containing the diary of Andrew A. Boyle during a trip from New Orleans to San Francisco, winter 1851. The item contains the penciled narrative of the trip including a visit to Havana, Cuba, the crossing of the Isthmus of Panama, and the steamer voyage up the west coast of Latin America and Mexico before the narrative ends about 300 miles south of San Diego, California. There is a section of loose paper bound with a pin, which suggests Boyle borrowed paper to continue his narrative. A transcription of the diary has been done. With much wear, abrasions, ink stains, discoloration and other damage, the condition is poor.
