ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, VOLUME 3, NUMBER 3, 1895
Color: Green; White
"Annual Publication of the Historical Society of Southern California, Volume 3, Number 3, 1895," printed by California Voice Print, 1895. The green clothbound volume with speckled paper has gold printing on the spine with the organization name and publication year. The complete publication is bound inside, including the original wrappers. At the beginning is the list of officers for the Society for 1895-1896, followed by the inaugural address of the president. Following are nine articles on the Society's origins; Alexander Bell and his early Los Angeles business block; the University Town area near the University of Southern California; a memorial sketch of J. J. Warner; an account of travel from Arizona to California in the 1870s; shipbuilding at San Gabriel; the old plan of Los Angeles; the origins of humankind; and the date of the discovery of gold in California. This last was by Isaac Given, a member of the Rowland and Workman Expedition, which is briefly mentioned. At the end are reports of the Society's publication committee, secretary, treasurer, and curator. The total number of pages are 62. On the inside of the front cover is the ex-libris label of a former owner. Although not so indicated in the artifact, the 1896 volume denotes the publications of 1893-1896 as volume three. With little evidence of use and, therefore, of wear, the artifact is in good condition.Lexicon
