Description

A newspaper clipping with an article about the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, ca. 1920s. The article, which is shown on the front side of the clipping, features a black and white photograph of the christening scene from a performance of The Mission Play. The photo includes many actors portraying Native Americans and R.D. McLean portraying Father Junipero Serra. The caption to the image emphasizes that the playhouse cost $1,000,000 to construct. No other information from the article is present. The back side of the clipping shows another article about the ground breaking ceremony for the United Artists' Theater in Los Angeles, California. The article includes a photo of Mary Pickford operating the steam shovel which broke ground for the site. When acquired, this object was stored on a page listing patrons inside a program for The Mission Play, ca. 1927 (Object ID: 2022.3.2.8). There was a nonprofessional attempt to fix a tear on the object with adhesive tape. With moderate brittleness, moderate discoloration, a minor acid burn, moderate tears, and a minor abrasion, the object is in fair to poor condition overall.
