Description

AUDEL'S CARPENTERS AND BUILDERS GUIDE, VOLUME 1 Color: Black "Audel's Carpenters and Builders Guide, Volume One," (New York: Theo. Audel & Co., 1924,) 430 pp. This is the first of four volumes on general building and carpentry work. The softcover book has a faux leather look with the front cover having a dentil-like border, within which, at the top, is the title embossed into the material. At the bottom is an image of a setting sun with a hammer superimposed over it. On the spine, in gold lettering, is the title, volume number, list of main topics, including tools, steel squares, saw filing, joinery, and furniture. Toward the bottom is an image of a hammer and there is a single horizontal line at the top and two of these lines at the bottom. The flyleaf has a quotation from John Ruskin concerning hand labor. On the other side of this are instructions on using a steel square, followed by the title page. A publisher's foreword outlines the purpose of the guides. An "Outline of Chapters" includes chapters on woods; nails; screws; bolts; work benches; many chapters on tools, including classifications, marking and measuring, holding, fastening, sharpening, and descriptions of various tools; using a steel square; joints and jointing; and furniture suggestions. The index is following the outline and at the beginning before the text. Many illustrations and charts, including drawings of tools, correct use of them, and information on applying them, accompany the text. At the back is an ad and order form for the set, with the back listing other related books. Some pages are stained, the front cover is slightly separated and there is some cover wear, but the artifact is in good condition.
