Description

"B2040 Los Angeles, Cal. Main Street." Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. 1882. The image is taken from the Temple Block at the intersection of Main, Spring, and Temple streets and looks north. To the left is a portion of the Downey Block. At the right are the facades of many structures, including the St. Charles and Grand Central hotels, the Baker Block, and, further in the distance, the Merced Theater and Pico House. On the quiet street are a few pedestrians, a horse-drawn cart, some parked conveyances on the sides, and two streetcars in the distance. The photo is mounted on a piece of gray paperboard. There is what may be the date of 4 April 1882 typed on the cloth tape at the lower left. There is some foxing on the image and some soiling and a stain, as well as foxing, soiling, stains, tears, and heavy edge wear to the mount, but the overall condition is fair.
