"Bathing in the Surf at Santa Monica 4510," Carleton Watkins, 1877. Part of Watkins' New Series of Pacific Coast Views, the image shows two men in the ocean with a wave crashing upon the shore and what appears to be a pole and towline for bathers to use when entering and exiting the water. There is a large stain at the top center of the right image, vertical marks on both images, soiling, and edge rubbing, stains, and soiling to the mount, so that the overall condition is fair.
