Description

"Battle of San Gabriel, California," from "Gleason's Pictorial Drawing Room Companion," 1851. The image shows a scene of battle with mounted Californios charging American infantry in a tight formation in a plain with the Montebello Hills in the near background and the San Gabriel River and San Gabriel Mountains in the distance. There is descriptive text discussing the battle (though it gives the year as 1849, rather than 1847) and crediting John Southwick, USN, for the drawing and sketch. With creases, edge tears, foxing, and soiling, the overall condition is good.
