Description

BLESSING OF THE LAURA TEMPLE DEDICATION PLAQUE, LA CASA NUEVA Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of Roman Catholic Bishop John J. Cantwell blessing the Laura Temple dedication plaque in the wall near the front door of La Casa Nueva, 22 December 1923. The Bishop, in his vestments, stands before the plaque, while a priest stands to his left. Closer to the camera are Walter P. Temple, in a dark suit, and, to his right, wearing matching light-colored vests and knee-length trousers, white shirts, and dark socks and shoes, are Walter P. Temple, Jr. and Edgar A. Temple. There are several other unidentified persons, including a nun, in the image. Part of the northern wall of the home is in the image, the house's basic frame having been completed and a rough plastering done. The door and window spaces do not show any signs of being readied for their contents and the area in front of the house is still dirt, though two long planks of wood lay next to the home. It is evident, from the lightness of the plaster, that the plaque had only recently been installed between the front door and the window space to the right. It was soon after moved to the northeastern corner, where it remains. On the reverse, the word "VELOX" is stamped into the paper; a number "19" is stamped at lower right; a pencil inscription in the hand of a former museum curator at top left reads "Source - Bob / Brown"; and a pencil inscription at lower left reads "5x7 Sepia." There is some discoloration and surface soiling on the reverse, but the object is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
