Book, Mission San Miguel Arcangel, Zephyrin Engelhardt, 1929. The blue cover shows the title of the book in black print. An inscription which reads, "Thomas Workman Temple II / 16 Hampton Court / Alhambra / Calif" has been handwritten onto the first unnumbered page. Engelhardt discusses the history of the Mission San Miguel from its inception to its contemporary circumstances. Engelhardt begins with the search to find an appropriate site for the mission in 1795 and its founding in 1797, tracking events up until operation of the mission was transferred to the Franciscan Provincial of Santa Barbara Province by John B. MacGinley, Bishop of the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno, in 1928. The book is divided into chapters that focus on clusters of notable events and/or topics. While Engelhardt is primarily concerned with the Franciscan padres, he also discusses other subjects such as the "Tulares Indians" (the Salinan people) and government authorities who were connected to the mission's history. Illustrations and photographs of the Mission San Miguel are present throughout the book. With a missing piece, minor stains, minor silverfish damage, minor edge wear, minor creases, minor discoloration, and minor tears, the object is in good condition overall.
