Description

Color: Green; White "The Business of Running a Home," a budgeting book issued by the Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1926. The landscape-oriented pamphlet has a textured white cover with a bar and rectangular box at the center of the front with green backgrounds. The title is in the bar, which is above the box, within which is an arched drawing or engraving of a man in a suit sitting with his hand on his chin at a desk with papers in front of him and a woman wearing an apron standing behind him. The inside front cover is an open letter from the insurance company financial vice-president about the pamphlet. Sections of the artifact include a page for a schedule of fixed charges, such as taxes, insurance, notes, dues, coal bills, repair items and so on. Items are posted at the left and there are monthly columns, with columns for annual totals by item. At the bottom are totals by months. This is followed by an annual summary sheet with month and total income at the left and total boxes at the right and bottom. A section on starting a budget is next, including an explanation of the monthly summary sheets, which comprise the rest of the booklet. These sheets are smaller than the rest of the pamphlet and are perforated so they can be torn out. There are statements on the back of these about saving, insurance, education, and mortgages. At the end are monthly automobile expense sheets, income and exemption sheets for income tax preparation and a financial worth sheet with assets and liabilities. The issuer and a label with insurance agent E. C. Holt are on the back. Aside from a few creases and a stain at the left reverse, the object is in good condition.
