"California and New Mexico: Message from the President of the United States," 31st Congres, 1st Session, Ex. Doc. No. 17, House of Representatives, printing of 6 February 1850. The item provides reports from various branches of the federal government and U.S. military concerning the conquered departments of Mexico from early 1847 until late 1849. The California section contains much material on the military governance of the territory, information on the Gold Rush, including Governor Bennett Riley's 30 August 1849 account of his trip to the mines, and a few maps. There is much soiling, browning, edge wear and, in the last third of the book, apparent burns to the lower part of pages with maps, including John Fremont's 1848 map of Oregon and Upper California, having additional tears and heavy damage, making them in often poor shape. The pages and boards are warped from contact with liquids and the spine ends are heavily worn, but the binding is fundamentally solid. Overall the condition can be adjudged poor.Lexicon
