Description

"California Being Rescued from Her Deadly Peril," issued by the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper, 1879. The item has an image of a sailing ship, representing the new constitution, in calm waters, while nearby in rough seas is a foundering small craft, denoting the old constitution of 1849, to which cling bankers, stockholders, the railroad, and fraud. Eureka, the female symbol of the state, is on the sinking craft begging to be rescued. In the roiling waters are "bulldozers," the Chinese, rival San Francisco newspaper, corporations, land monopolists, and others. The caption is at the bottom. With many original folds, on which are some tears, soiling, and edge wear, as well as fragility, the condition is fair.
