"California of the South," by Walter Lindley and J. P. Widney (New York: D. Appleton and Company,) 1888. The 377-page book has a red cloth cover with an image of trees and bushes and piping in black and gold lettering, including the title on the front and the title and author's last names on the spine. The book is divided into part I on the climate of the Pacific Coast by Widney and part II, a general analysis of the southern California region, including Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Riverside counties, by Lindley. Widney's section concerns geography, climate, commerce, roads, harbors, civic and country life, education, and disease. Lindley's contributions are more by locales, althought there are some shared elements of Widney's section. An appendix features sections on agriculture, animal husbandry, irrigation, oil development, railroads, and tourist information. There are many lithographs of local scenes and three maps, one a township map of Los Angeles County and the other statewide maps, as illustrations. The signature of a former owner is on the frontispiece and a bookplate from a bookstore is on the inside front cover. In good overall condition, the book has creases to the top right corner of most pages; dented cover corners; cover soiling and some soiling on page edges; page browning and minor foxing; fading of the spine lettering; losses on the cloth at the spine; stains on the cover; small tears on the cover cloth and an in-house caused tear on the map at page 350.Lexicon
