Description

CANCELLED CHECK FROM TEMPLE AND WORKMAN, BANKERS Color: Black; Orange; Red A cancelled check issued on the banking house of Temple and Workman, 13 August 1875. The artifact has a stylized design at the left within borders with paired thin red lines. At the top is a box for the check number, which is empty. Next to this is the imprinted location "Los Angeles, Cal." and at far right is a box for the date, with the numbers "187-" for the year imprinted. The date is written in with black ink. At the center is the firm name in script with the first letters in each word and the ampersand dividing the names of the pricipals surrounded by vine-and-leaf designs. The firm name is superimposed over a two-cent stamp issued by the United Sates Department of Internal Revenue. Tward the bottom are the lines for payee, which is filled in with the name of Antonio Latelle Orcha, the amount, which is $110, and the signature of the payer of the check "D. Freeman." Just right of center is a very faint cancellation stamp in an oval shape with blue ink. At the top is "PAID" with the date "AUG / 13" in the center and the name "TEMPLE & WORKMAN" at the bottom. Daniel Freeman, owner of the Rancho Aguaje de Centinela was a partner of bank president F. P. F. Temple in a subdivision of part of that rancho and was also an assignee from January to September 1876 after the bank failed. Aside from a faint stain at the right, next to the word "Bankers" and some fading ink, the artifact is in good condition.
