Description

Color: Black; Blue; Red; Yellow A postcard folder of Catalina Island, published by Western Publishing and Novelty Co., ca. 1928. The front panel has the words "CATALINE ISLAND," in red letters, followed by "CALIFORNIA / THE MAGIC ISLE" in black letters. The scene is of the Yachet Club building and the Casino looking westward and including a small portion of the beach and rows of pennants strung along power poles. The publisher's name and the abbreviation of another company name, likely that of the image, are at the bottom. Space for an addressee, which was filled in, is at the lower right. A cancelled two-cent stamp is at the top right and the delivery stamp, dated Dec. 6, 1928 from Avalon. The reverse, which has the cut for the folding flap, is an image of the steamship "Catalina" sailing at sea. Inside of this is a topographical map of the island with sixteen points of interest identified, a scale of miles, and other information, including acreage, average width and length. On the inside of the flap is a brief message, which makes reference to the visibility of snow on the San Gabriel Mountains, some sixty miles distant. Views inside include Avalon Bay from the Wrigley Mansion and the home; the Hotel St. Catherine; flying fish; seal rocks; the town of Avalon; aboard steamers and glass-bottom boats; the residence of western writer Zane Grey; and others. One set of cards has a large crease, but the rest are fine and there are cover creases, dented corners, and some light soiling, but the overall condition is good.
