CEMENT BLOCK LAYING, EAST WALL OF THE WORKMAN HOUSE, AFTER COLLAPSE
Color: Brown
A color polaroid photograph of the beginning of cement block laying at the east side of the Workman House, ca. May 1977. Two workers are shown, one standing in the trench next to the house and one on the ground, at left--these are probably the masons. Some of the first three or four levels of block are laid and mortared, while small mortar tables are set just outside of the trench as part of the laying process. The massive gap where the original adobe wall had recently collapsed shows the interior of the structure, as well as temporary wood supports to shore up the floors and ceilings. At left is the small kitchen room and its adobe wall which did not collapse in the accident, while beyond this is the still-plastered brick well room at the end of the home. At left in the foreground are portions of wood planks, a wheelbarrow, and debris, while at upper left is a very dark sky, demonstrating the rainy conditions at the time of the wall's collapse. A pencil inscription at the bottom of the artifact reads "Starting East Wall Block," while another at the lower left reads "8x8," referring to 99.5.14.289. On the bottom of the reverse in red ink is the inscription "Bill K" indicating Bill Kalnoski, construction superintendent. With little indication of wear or damage, the object is in good condition.
