"Census of the City and County of Los Angeles for the Year of 1850" edited by Maurice H. and Marco R. Newmark (Los Angeles: The Times-Mirror Press,) 1929. The 139-page hardcover book, without a dustjacket has the title in gold letters on the front cover and the title and publisher's name in gold on the spine. The work is mainly a transcription of the original returns from the census, but there are also introductions, facts about the census, statistical tables of the various columns from the census (including dwellings and families, age, gender, racial, and occupational classifications, value of real estate, state and foreign national origin, and others), and appendices on county boundaries in 1850, the founding and naming of the city, a biographical sketch of census taker John R. Evertsen; the story of trapper Pierre Lebecque (Lebec), and an index. There are photographic reproductions of original census pages, other photos, a fold-out map of the 1849 Ord Survey of Los Angeles, and other material. With light rubbing on the cover corners and spine; minor page yellowing; some fading of the spine lettering; light scratches on the back cover; and cover wear, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
