"Dr. Chase's Recipes of Information for Everybody: An Invaluable Collection of About Eight Hundred Practical Recipes . . . " by A. W. Chase (Fourth ed., Ann Arbor: R. A. Beal, 1879), 646 pp. A hardcover book with a dark brown cover, the front of which is embossed with a geometric border. Within this border is a stylized cartouche with the title and author's name. At each corner near the border are images of bottles with each labeled, as follows: "COUGH"; "SYRUP"; "ALTERNATIVE"; "BITTERS." If the lettering was gilt, it is completely faded, whereas the spine has the title and publisher in gold lettering. The first pages have drawings of the author, Chase's printing house and of Michigan University Hall, both in Ann Arbor. Rather than a cookbook, these recipes are for many types of uses, including for the occupations of merchants and grocers; saloon owners; leather workers; painters; blacksmiths; jewellers; gunsmiths; cabinet makers; barbers; and others. Aside from the aforementioned drawings, there are 20 other illustrations. On the inside back cover in pencil is the inscription "Mrs. S. A. Sigler / Longmarch / Colorado" with Sigler's name in purple ink beneath. Below this signature is a third inscription: "Liliian Sties / Lyons Colo." With abrasions and dents on the cover edges; a separated binding; stains and discolorations on most pages; and other signs of wear and damage, the book is in poor condition.
