Description

Chess Set: A set of chess pieces, without playing board, manufactured by the Milton Bradley Company, ca. 1920s. The set consists of a box (a) and lid (b). The lid (b), which is three-sided, has a label (see marks/inscriptions.) There is an instruction booklet (c), which has become separated and appears to be missing a page. The pieces are plain, undecorated wood, in brown and black colors, numbered as follows: brown--king (d); queen (e); bishops (f-g); knights (h-i); rooks (j-k); pawns (l-s); black--king (t); queen (u); bishops (v-w); knights (x-y); rooks (z-aa); pawns (bb-ii). The box is in poor condition with much wear, especially on the corners and edges, and the label badly stained and discolored. The instruction booklet is in poor condition, because of the separation, missing page, and discoloration, tears, folds, and creases. The playing pieces are in good condition with a pawn in each set having a chipped bottom. Label on box lid reads: "One set [space] 4715/Chess Men/MILTON BRADLEY COMPANY/Springfield, Massachusetts/Made in U.S.A."; also written in pencil at the top of the lid is, "$.50"
