Color: Brown; White
A Chickering & Sons square grand piano, 1870. The artifact consists of several parts. Part a) is the rosewood veneered case with rounded edges and applied moulding and a metal inner frame and sound board painted gold with original hammers, strings, and felt. On the center of the board is painted "Chickering 7 sons / No. 38743 / BOSTON," while embossed at the upper left is "CHICKERING & SONS" and embossed at the bottom left, under some strings is "51B" indicating the model number. Four keys were replaced and are not ivory, as are the originals. Twenty other keys have chips, cracks or missing panels on the front. On the panel above the keyboard is gold painted lettering reading "Chickering / BOSTON." Part b) is a lyre-and-scroll design music stand in a dark-colored wood and which lifts up on hinges when stood. Parts c-f) are the four scrolled legs with ball feet. Part g) consists of two medal foot petals on a wood scrolled bracket. Parts h-i) are the two thin cylindrical metal foot pedal rods, leading from the pedals into the case. The instrument is out-of-tune and not in playable condition. In general, the piano is in fair condition with scratches, nicks, cracks, chips and, in a few sections, losses of veneer and wood in the case; a large section of the ball foot of the back left leg missing; and rust of the metal on the sound board and on the pedals, the right of which is broken.Lexicon
