Description

CHINESE QUARTER (CALLE DE LOS NEGROS, LOS ANGELES) Color: Black; White A reproduction photograph of a lithograph of the "Chinese Quarter" or Chinatown, centered on Calle de Los Negros, now Los Angeles Street, Los Angeles, 1880s. The image shows the calle at the center with several long two-gabled adobe buildings on either side, most looking dilapidated. Pedestrians, horses and wagons or carriages and other vehicles are in the streets, which look rough with stones as well as dirt. Power poles are along the west side of the street and a street lamp is in the foregroud. A horseshoe-shaped sign hangs above the building at right in the foreground. The building partially at left is the Coronel Block, scene of the 1871 massacre of nineteen Chinese. In 1887, the street was removed for the extension of Los Angeles Street from the south. The caption at the bottom reads "CHINESE QUARTER" and the image comes from a book of lithographs of Los Angeles in the Museum's collection. As a newly printed image, the artifact is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
