Description

A lithograph, "Christmas—1863" from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper," 2 January 1864. The two-page illustration consists of five vignettes. These show soldiers at an outdoor campfire, what appears to be a soldier on horseback, soldiers decorating an outdoor area for Christmas, a group riding in a sleigh while boys play war games, and an interior view of family gathered in a parlor in which there is a table-top Christmas tree and children's gifts. The reverse pages have portions of short stories, poetry and humor. A large part of the upper left corner is missing, taking away much of the horseback vignette and there are tears (a large one in the interior scene) missing portions of the wide margins, significant staining and soiling, so the condition is poor.
