CHRISTMAS CARD WITH MEDIEVAL TROUBADOURSEntry/Object ID
2000.53.1.9Description
Color: Black; Red; White
A Christmas card with an image of Medieval troubadours near a home, ca. 1913. The white card has this silhouette image on the upper front, consisting of three men playing a lute, harp and flute, with a woman probably singing. The home has an open second-floor window, with two women looking out. A three-prong candelabra is on the sill and one of the women is dropping something down. Part of the wall, a door, and a street lamp are also in the scene, with the lamp light, the candles and part of the troubadours' clothing trimmed in red. Below is the printed message "A merry Christmas wish to you and / a very happy New Year too." At the bottom is a handwritten inscription in black ink reading "To Uncle & Dot from Mabel / Rencliffe." On the blank reverse is a message: "(`Write us some time') / Dear Folks / Again our holiday / season is here and we hope / you are both feeling well / enough to enjoy it. Mother is / still in Texas & Nina writes / me she is real well since / the cool weather came but / she was very poorly thro the / hot summer. Emma [?] is very busy with her school work / She is in 2nd year of high. She / also plays violin in school & / church orchestra. She seems to / enjoy the music. I hope you have / a nice winter. Best of wishes Mabel." There is a pencil mark at the lower right front, some stains at the lower left of the front and a few significant creases, so the artifact is in fair condition.Lexicon
