Description

Color: Gold; Green "Claudio and Anita: A Historical Romance of San Gabriel's Early Mission Days," by Maria S. Lopez de Cummings (Los Angeles: J. F. Rowny Press, 1921), 142 pp. The book has a green textured cardstock cover with gold lettering for the title at the top of the front. The lettering is within a dark green box on top of which is an illustration of a rose. At the beginning of the inside is a black and white photograph of the author's father, Don Francisco Lopez. This is followed by a title page; a dedication; an introduciton by John Steven McGroarty; a preface; and a table of contents. The story is that of Claudio Lopez y de la Mora, a Californio and great-grandfather of the author who answered the California missionaries' appeal for assistance in their work. Although de la Mora is not a fictional character, the story is only semi-biographical and highly romanticized. With several abrasions; creases; dented corners; soiling; fading of the gold lettering; small tears on the cover; and overall wear, the artifact is in poor condition.
