Description

CLOSEUP OF METAL BALL, ORIGINAL WEST WALL, EL CAMPO SANTO Color: Blue; Red A color polaroid photograph of a close-up of an original metal ball atop a pillar on the original west wall of El Campo Santo, ca. 1977. Taken from inside the cemetery and looking to the west, the image shows the round, unornamented ball and its stem just above the top of the pillar on which the ball rests. An inscription in ink at the bottom edge of the object reads, "Typical of Cemetary [sic] Balls / Not Hammered Mainly Rust." This seems to indicate that the ball is original and was, probably, a model for others to be manufactured to replace the lost or damaged ones around the cemetery fence. Because of the close-up view, the background is blurry, but the heart-shaped planter and the portion of the Pio Pico Walkway that goes around it are visible along with some trees. With no evident wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
